This was my first AWP conference, and, overall, I enjoyed it. I caught some informative sessions and even a couple of sessions where friends sat on panels. The book fair is a huge component of this conference, and I spent several hours wandering the tables there. I had the pleasure of meeting Hannah Tinti from
One Story, along with many other literary journal editors. It was nice to see the faces behind these publications and to chat with them about what kind of work they are looking for. There were also many small and university presses represented there and getting to know each publishers’ niche a little better will help me to focus my submissions.
The best sessions that I caught were: From Publication to Promotion: Capturing the Attention of the Media, and Book Contracts. The first was a panel discussion by four people working in various aspects of the media (from radio, to a Booklist editor, to a former producer for Oprah). They shared what got their attention and how to think outside the major media channels to promote your book. The second session was given by Anita Fore, the Director of Legal Services for the Authors Guild. She hit the high points of a publishing contract and pointed out places to be careful when negotiating.
My biggest criticism of this conference is that there were at least two sessions that I wanted to attend which were in undersized rooms for the crowd and many people were turned away. My advice is to show up early for any session you’d be sorry you missed, even if it means missing a session right before that one.
For the early-bird price of $140, this conference was a good value. Especially if you were able to carry away all the free books and journals offered at the bookfair. I also hit the “Public Reception and Dance Party” one evening and had a free glass of wine! This is a large conference, so if you prefer something more intimate, go to a smaller gathering. I knew probably twenty-five people attending the conference, and I was lucky if I crossed paths with each of them once the entire time.
Next year AWP is in Denver. The link to the conference (above) also has a feedback survey for attendees.
